| Name: | Emmeline Vance | |||||||||
| Bio: | Nicknames: Em, Emmy, Evil (jokingly of course) Date of Birth/Age: May 5, 1959/20 House/School Years: Hufflepuff/1970-1977 Blood Status: Halfblood Alliance: Order of the Phoenix Member Occupation: Volunteer work for Madam Malkin's and Quality Quidditch Supplies, part time at the Apothecary in Diagon Alley. Appearance: Emmeline measures at 5 foot 8 inches, sometimes taller if she's wearing the right shoes, but her height isn't the most noticeable thing about her by any means. Her hazel eyes have more depth and are often the first thing people see when they catch her from the front. They have been known to tint on the green side when she is particularly happy or brown when she is more emotional, matching the hair that falls around her shoulders in a natural wave. When she smiles, Emmeline's face is bright and youthful, but she can look off putting when she's stern or neutral. Her clothing is stylish because she's been able to take tips on how to keep her clothes mended and up to date from Madam Malkin and she seldom wears muggle clothing because of the company she keeps. PB: Rachel Weisz Personality: Emmeline is a wonderful friend to those she likes and considers her friend, though she can be a little overbearing at times. She likes helping people, but she doesn't always know when to stop unless her attention is directed elsewhere. Her emotions have been known to get the best of her sometimes, but she's been working on that, and actually hopes that her heart will harden over time. She is basically a big kid who may have grown into her body, but her mind isn't entirely focused yet. She can be a flirt, and often is, though she never means to hurt anyone by her actions. While she is a flirt with many boys, she can be close to girls in an entirely different way. Not that she isn't friends with males - because she is - but her kinship with females is almost spiritual at times, being able to have more heart to hearts since girls don't think she's flirting with them. Still, she tries to be there for everyone regardless of gender and is loyal to the end with friendships and secrets. Her hobbies include daydreaming if only because she likes to imagine a perfect utopia where people get along and there is no war and sometimes she needs to get away from the seriousness of it all, only being able to escape mentally. It's her outlet, much like singing is - although she doesn't do it in public often. She has been known to hum quietly to the radio, but it takes coaxing and the occasional bribe to get her to actually sing along to any form of music. Her lovely voice is a gift from her father as her mother is tone deaf, and when she was little they would sing together. Her father is the only man who wouldn't have to bribe her into singing on the spot. Emmeline is - in a word - complicated (or perhaps simply complex). Achievements: Noteworthy N.E.W.T.s in Potions (O), Charms (O), DADA (E), and Transfiguration (E) Hufflepuff Prefect 5th year Hobbies: Quidditch, mending, boys, singing, daydreaming, having fun. Sexuality: Heterosexual Boggart: Trolls, for they are annoyingly frightening and frighteningly annoying. Patronus: Though weak, she has cast one once and it was a beaver. History: Emmeline Callidora Vance was born to Hannah Jane Smythe and Walter Ciaphas Vance after very little planning at all on the parts of her parents. They were married in a quiet ceremony among close friends because Hannah's parents didn't know that Walter was a wizard and Walter's parents were unaware of his muggle bride at first. When they found out, Walter's parents gradually accepted Hannah and her "magical handicap." Hannah's father, however, had a heart attack and died while her mother was driven insane. Hannah did not consider it much of a loss because she was in love and Walter's family did not disown either of them, even when they found out that two weeks after being married they were expecting their first child. Hannah nearly died in childbirth and Emmeline was born premature, but due to the care and skill of several mediwitches at St. Mungo's, both mother and daughter pulled through. Walter and Hannah argued about how to name the baby girl, but they eventually put aside their quarrel when Hannah put her foot down. She said that she went through the hard part and it was Walter who needed to man up and name their child. He did, Emmeline fought to gain her strength from prematurity, and by the time Emmeline was two years old - they were certain she would be magical like her father. Emmeline had a pleasant childhood with both muggle and magical children around her, and most of the time she didn't know which was which. Her father took her to Quidditch matches in hopes that she would either be interested or want to marry a Quidditch player someday while her mother taught her to be a lady as best as she could. The Vance family blinked and they were sending Emmeline off to Hogwarts. She was awkward at first, trying to make friends with anyone who made eye contact on the train and determined to look self assured while failing miserably. Eventually she decided that anyone who would smile at her would be worth befriending because not everyone smiled, and it was no surprise when she was sorted into Hufflepuff. The first few weeks of school changed her "make friends with everyone" attitude and she became more quiet and aware while becoming closer friends with those who approached her first as well as the other Hufflepuffs in her year. Her close knit circle of friends was fine by her and actually helped get her through the year. Her second year brought boys that she was curious about, but she didn't spend much time with them because they were in other houses and they seemed more confident than she was comfortable with just yet. She watched James, Sirius and Remus in wonder, couldn't understand why Peter hadn't been put in Hufflepuff or why Severus was so picked on (he reminded her of a boy she used to play with when she was younger), and often hid around a corner when pranks were performed so she could try to figure out the appeal. Before that year ended, she gave up trying to figure anything out with them and decided that she would simply not encourage anything that would result in harm if she could avoid it - eventually avoiding the boys altogether. Emmeline realised she had hormones in her third year and began flirting with boys. The problem was she didn't know it was flirting, she only thought she needed to be nicer to boys and give them more attention. She was pulled aside once or twice by other girls who thought she was trying to steal their boyfriends, but her pure innocence stopped them from harming her or thinking she was being underhanded with her actions. Her attention was turned toward classes and quidditch, but she couldn't help flirting with the occasional boy and by her fourth year she was dating a Ravenclaw. It didn't last because they both decided a fling wasn't what they needed, and they knew their relationship would never get serious. Any onlooker would say it wasn't even obvious they dated at all. Emmeline didn't know how to date. She went with her strengths and studied, becoming a prefect in her fifth year long enough to know that wasn't what she wanted to do later on, though she never refused to help others. Emmeline went to Dumbledore and requested her dormmate receive the honours the next year so that she could figure out what to do with the rest of her life. Darkness looming, she knew she wanted to help, but she didn't think she was cut out to be an Auror. Her marks were high enough, but she didn't think she could be focused enough and envied those who were. Emmeline decided she would dabble in a bit of everything that could help, mastering antidotes and particular defence spells in her sixth year. She made continuous trips to Diagon Alley over the summer and secured a position with the Apothecary so long as she achieved an O in her Potions N.E.W.T. She conquered that hurdle and has worked there part time ever since. Emmeline would work there full time if she didn't like spending time in other places, volunteering her time as simply another body to watch Madam Malkin's or Quality Quidditch during food breaks, or occasionally helping sort new shipments for both places. Often both places would pay her in trade, but no money was exchanged nor hours set for her to work and she liked it that way. After Emmeline's talk with Dumbledore in her fifth year about how she didn't feel like she should be a prefect anymore, Dumbledore encouraged her to continue to work for the side of good and brought her into the Order once she turned of age. She fears for people like her mother who are good and simply disadvantaged for not being magical, knowing that if it ever came down to it, she would lay down her life for someone else's. | |||||||||
